Lockdown Scenario for wedding photographers
The wedding industry in India is worth a billion dollars! will have its own impacts during the lockdown, that is the fate of almost every other industry in the world, not just in India, the best part for wedding photographers in our opinion is the recovery would be slightly better than compared to other big industries in the market.
While talking to some of our colleagues in the industry, we found most of them are paranoid and highly demotivated Suddenly the job of an Indian wedding photographer all of a sudden has become a risky business given the number of people you meet or interact for the first time during a wedding (which was always considered a plus)
Though it’s true that photographers who make a living through studios have to suffer during the lockdown, since their business is depended on the number of walk-ins, things are not that bad for a wedding photographer in general. Some of the big names in the industry might take a small beating because of the huge team they own and the rent for the huge office space and given the number of technicians those are in the payroll, it will be a difficult phase for them, the one who has to go through the toughest phase would be the wedding photographers who are freelancers, who are usually hired by studios on event basic - that being paid on the day of the shoot.
Comparing ourselves to other industries like travel and tourism, restaurants, coaching classes, training centers and entertainment industry especially cinema hall among other show business’, the Indian wedding photographer’s industry or even the Indian wedding industry ecosystem - the stage decors, catering unit, makeup artists, wedding hall owners are still going to do a lot better than others.
As far as the wedding photography industry and the wedding industry, in general, considered though there will be a small dip in the number of events a studio does in this time of the year and there might even be lesser crowds in the reception evening, at least, till the end of the year, since many people would stay home. Small assignments like portrait sessions and baby shower shoots might be cut short for safety reasons, the industry, on the whole, is defiantly well placed than most of the industries today.
Make full use of the lockdown, upgrade your skills, experiment new skills if you have your equipment at home and learn some cool editing skills which can suddenly turn handy. Check out our blog on what we decided to do in the lockdown period.
We have decided to not take any further events in the month of May 2020 even if the lockdown is not extended further May 3rd, 2020. Though we completely understand that a wedding photographer’s team cannot escape crowds, we have taken this decision for the betterment of our team. The state and the central government are doing a great job with a team of dedicated healthcare works, if we fully cooperate with the government, then we are pretty sure that things will be well under in the next 20 days. Let’s remain home and completely help our nation to flatten the curve.
